Strawberries, Salsa, and New Vendors at the May 25th Market

This Week at the Market

This week we are excited to welcome a number of vendors for the first time this season. North Oaks Farm will be joining us, bringing sweet, juicy spring berries as well as homemade jams. Salsa Island will be also there with delicious locally-made salsa in a variety of flavors. Gaiser Bee Company will be bringing honey and other bee products. We also hope to see Baby Nalms, a new local baby food delivery service, start selling their convenient frozen baby food made from fresh, wholesome ingredients this week.

Like Mom's Only Vegan

Don’t forget to stop by weekly vendor Back Acres Farm for a full selection of in-season produce like spinach, lettuce, kale, and strawberries, as well as eggs and meat. Aunt Flora’s will also be back with warm, buttery cobblers, including apple, blackberry, and savory vegetable. Like Mom’s Only Vegan will be selling their delicious cookies, including Chocolate Peanut Butter, Rocky Road, and Sugar ‘n’ Spice. Visit Bright Soapworks for wonderfully-scented handmade soaps unlike anything you can buy at the grocery store and pick up pastries and bread from Shadeau Bakery. Get a bag of kettle corn from Jerry at Popcorn Hole and plan on getting your dinner (or an afternoon snack) from J & R Southern Grill (their ribs were a hit last week).

Thank you to all the customers and vendors who joined us at last week’s market opening and to the Aiken Band and Caves and Clouds (pictured above) who provided us with outstanding entertainment; we had a great opening day and we are looking forward to a wonderful season!

Product Spotlight: Kale

Kale is an extremely healthy and flavorful green related to broccoli, cabbage, and collards. Its quality and flavor are typically best when it grows in cooler weather, but it can withstand the heat better that greens like spinach and lettuce. Kale varieties range from the frilly curly kale most commonly seen to the smoother lacinato, or dinosaur kale, which is great for making kale chips (here’s a nice guide to different varieties). Kale can be eaten raw or cooked, but if eaten raw must be sliced very thin or tenderized my massaging. The kale caesar salad recipe below uses the technique of massaging the raw kale with oil to break down the tough outer coating of the leaves. The result is tender kale that holds up to a flavorful dressing and even lasts a few days in the fridge (unlike lettuce salads). It makes a great dinner or potluck dish, but fair warning: if you share this dish with people they will ask you for the recipe. The sautéed kale includes butter and garlic and makes a perfect side dish.

Market Information

The outdoor College Hill Farm Market is open every Thursday from 3:00 to 6:30pm in the parking lot of the College Hill Presbyterian Church, 5742 Hamilton Ave from May 18th to October 12th. Most weeks feature music from 5-6:30 and some weeks feature kids’ activities and food demos.

The College Hill Farm Market accepts credit cards and EBT/SNAP. Those using EBT will receive up to $10 in matching Produce Perks tokens to purchase fresh fruits and vegetables from participating markets. Stop by the market table for more information.
